6. Hallelujah, I'm a Bum/Wild Tchoupitoulas
6. Hallelujah, I'm a Bum/Wild TchoupitoulasCurrent SongsA section: 16 bars of waltz "Hallelujah, I'm a Bum," followed by 3-bar plagal cadence ("amen"), then 4-bar bass-and-perc NOLA groove.B section: 8-bars of same NOLA groove with stingers, transitioning to 4-bar mambo. Repeat B until coda is called. Coda repeats 4-bar mambo and outros on 3-bar plagal cadence. We can be a little loose with the repeats. Watch for the transitions and you will be OK.
Repeat "Hallelujah" multiple times, singing verses on alternate repeats. Listen for plagal cadence to segue into Tchoupitoulas.
Once NOLA groove is established, ad lib. On bar 8 listen for the transition to the mambo.
Outro: listen for repeat of mambo (repeats its 4 bars). Final plagal cadence rit and rubato.https://www.google.com/search?q=halleluj...Hallelujah is a Protestant/Salvation Army hymn (Revive Us Again) repurposed by IWW in 1908 and can be found in the 31st edition (among others) of their Little Red Song Book. Our arrangement was lifted from the hymnal of my great-grandfather's church.
Wild Tchoupitoulas is loosely based on a song by the Neville Brothers and Professor Long Hair in Les Blanc's NOLA documentary "Always for Pleasure."F

How the hell can I work when there's no work to do?
Refrain
Hallelujah, I'm a bum,
Hallelujah, bum again,
Hallelujah, give us a handout
To revive us again.
Oh, why don't you save all the money you earn?
If I didn't eat, I'd have money to burn.
Whenever I get all the money I earn,
The boss will be broke, and to work he must turn.
Oh, I like my boss, he's a good friend of mine,
That's why I am starving out on the bread line.
The parts may not line up perfectly and some have alternate titles. Don't worry about it. We'll make it work until somebody gets around to cleaning it up.
I don't remember why we started playing these two songs together. Saves a page turn?
These lyrics are from the original Wobbly publication. There are many reinterpretations appropriate to their times (and some not appropriate to the AFMB)
